Sahih al-Bukhari 7146 (Book 93, Hadith 10) #6865
The Responsibility of Authority

SUMMARY: It is better to not seek authority, and if it is given to you without asking, then Allah will help you in it. If you make an oath and later find something better, expiate your oath and do what is better.

Narrated 'Abdur-Rahman bin Samura: The Prophet said, "O 'Abdur-Rahman! Do not seek to be a ruler, for if you are given authority on your demand then you will be held responsible for it, but if you are given it without asking (for it), then you will be helped (by Allah) in it. If you ever take an oath to do something and later on you find that something else is better, then you should expiate your oath and do what is better".

QUICK LESSONS:
Do not seek out positions of power or authority; If given such a position without asking for it then accept it; Expiate your vow and do what would be best instead when finding something else more beneficial after making an oath; Take responsibility for your actions; Be mindful when making promises or commitments; Do what is best even after making an oath or commitment .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the responsibility that comes with authority. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ advised 'Abdur-Rahman bin Samura not to seek out a position of power or authority because if he does so, he will be held responsible for his actions while in office. However, if he is given the position without asking for it then Allah will help him in his duties. Additionally, the Prophet ﷺ also taught that if one makes an oath but later finds something else that would be more beneficial than what was promised in the oath then they should expiate their vow and do what would be best instead. This hadith teaches us about taking responsibility for our actions as well as being mindful of our words when making promises or commitments.
