Separation Due To Lian (or Mula'ana)

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ gave a verdict for the separation of a man and his wife due to their case of Lian (or Mula'ana) and the child was regarded as belonging to the wife only.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: A man and his wife had a case of Lian (or Mula'ana) during the lifetime of the Prophet and the man denied the paternity of her child. The Prophet gave his verdict for their separation (divorce) and then the child was regarded as belonging to the wife only.
حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ قَزَعَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما أَنَّ رَجُلاً، لاَعَنَ امْرَأَتَهُ فِي زَمَنِ النَّبِيِّ وَانْتَفَى مِنْ وَلَدِهَا فَفَرَّقَ النَّبِيُّ بَيْنَهُمَا، وَأَلْحَقَ الْوَلَدَ بِالْمَرْأَةِ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a man and his wife who had a case of Lian or Mula’anah during the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. In this situation, the husband denied paternity of her child. The Prophet ﷺ then gave his verdict for their separation or divorce and declared that the child belonged to the wife only. This hadith teaches us that it is important to be honest in all matters related to marriage and family life. It also shows us how important it is for us to follow Islamic rulings when dealing with such matters as they are based on justice and fairness. Furthermore, this hadith also highlights how much respect women have in Islam as they are given rights even if there is doubt over paternity issues.
