Sahih al-Bukhari 6257 (Book 79, Hadith 31) #6010
Responding to Jewish Greetings

SUMMARY: The hadith is about how to respond when the Jews greet you.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar: Allah's Messenger said, "When the Jews greet you, they usually say, 'As-Samu 'alaikum (Death be on you),' so you should say (in reply to them), 'Wa'alaikum (And on you).

QUICK LESSONS:
Respond politely even if someone has ill wishes towards you.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us how to respond when we are greeted by the Jews. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ instructed us that if they greet us with ‘As-Samu ‘alaikum’, which means ‘death be on you’, then we should reply with ‘Wa’alaikum’, which means ‘and on you’. This shows that even though they may not have good intentions in their greeting, we should still be polite and courteous in our response. We should not stoop down to their level and instead show them kindness and respect despite their ill wishes towards us.
