Sahih al-Bukhari 5662 (Book 75, Hadith 22) #5436
Sickness as Expiation for Sins

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ visited a sick man and told him that his sickness may be an expiation for his sins, but the man said it was just a fever that would take him to his grave.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: Allah's Messenger entered upon sick man to pay him a visit, and said to him, "Don't worry, Allah willing, (your sickness will be) an expiation for your sins". The man said, "No, it is but a fever that is boiling within an old man and will send him to his grave". On that, the Prophet said, "Then yes, it is so".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's visit to a sick man. He told the man not to worry because Allah willing, his sickness could be an expiation for any sins he may have committed. The man replied that it was only a fever which would eventually take him to his grave. The Prophet accepted this and agreed with him. This hadith teaches us that even though we may suffer from illnesses or hardships in life, they can still be seen as blessings from Allah if we use them as opportunities to repent and ask forgiveness for our sins. It also reminds us of how compassionate and understanding the Prophet was towards those who were suffering from illness or hardship in life.
