Sahih al-Bukhari 5492 (Book 72, Hadith 18) #5268
Hunting and Eating an Onager

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) allowed Abu Qatada to hunt an Onager and eat it, even though he was not in the state of Ihram.

Narrated Abu Qatada: I was with the Prophet (on a journey) between Mecca and Medina, and all of them, (ie the Prophet and his companions) were in the state of Ihram, while I was not in that state. I was riding my horse and I used to be fond of ascending mountains. So while I was doing so I noticed that the people were looking at something. I went to see what it was, and behold it was an Onager. I asked my companions, "What is that?" They said, "We do not know". I said, "It is an Onager'. They said, "It is what you have seen". I had left my whip, so I said to them, "Hand to me my whip". They said, "We will not help you in that (in hunting the Onager)". I got down, took my whip and chased the animal (on my horse) and did not stop till I killed it. I went to them and said, "Come on, carry it!" But they said, "We will not even touch it". At last I alone carried it and brought it to them. Some of them ate of it and some refused to eat of it. I said (to them), "I will ask the Prophet about it (on your behalf)". When I met the Prophet, I told him the whole story. He said to me, "Has anything of it been left with you?" I said, "Yes". He said, "Eat, for it is a meal Allah has offered to you".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about Abu Qatada who was travelling with the Prophet ﷺ between Mecca and Medina. All of them were in the state of Ihram except for Abu Qatada who was riding his horse. He noticed that people were looking at something and when he went to see what it was he found an Onager. He asked his companions if they knew what it was but they said no so he told them that it was an Onager. They then refused to help him take his whip so that he could hunt the animal but eventually he got down from his horse and took his whip himself before chasing after the animal until he killed it. When they saw this some of them ate from it while others refused to do so which is why Abu Qatada decided to ask the Prophet ﷺ about this situation on their behalf. The Prophet ﷺ then allowed him to eat from it as a meal given by Allah for him alone since none of them had helped him in hunting or carrying the animal back with him.

This hadith teaches us that we should always be willing to help each other out even if we are not obligated or required too because doing good deeds can bring us closer towards Allah's mercy and blessings as well as reward us with unexpected gifts like meals given by Him alone! It also teaches us that we should never give up on our goals no matter how difficult they may seem because hard work will always pay off in one way or another! Lastly, this hadith reminds us that we should always be grateful for whatever blessings come our way regardless of how small or insignificant they may seem because every little bit counts!
