Sahih al-Bukhari 5427 (Book 70, Hadith 55) #5201
The Comparison of Believers and Hypocrites

SUMMARY: The hadith compares believers who recite the Quran to a citron that smells and tastes good, believers who do not recite the Quran to a date that has no smell but tastes sweet, hypocrites who recite the Quran to an aromatic plant that smells good but tastes bitter, and hypocrites who do not recite the Quran to a Colocynth plant which has no smell and is bitter in taste.

Narrated Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari: Allah's Messenger said, "The example of a Believer who recites the Qur'an, is that of a citron which smells good and tastes good; And the example of a Believer who does not recite the Qur'an, is that of a date which has no smell but tastes sweet; and the example of a hypocrite who recites the Qur'an, is that of an aromatic plant which smells good but tastes bitter; and the example of a hypocrite who does not recite the Qur'an, is that of a Colocynth plant which has no smell and is bitter in taste".

QUICK LESSONS:
Believe in Allah & His Messenger; Read & Study Qur'an; Practice what you Preach

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith compares believers with nonbelievers by using examples of plants. It states that those who believe in Allah and His Messenger are like a citron which smells good and tastes good. Those who believe but do not read or study the Qur'an are like dates which have no smell but still taste sweet. On the other hand, those who claim to be believers yet do not act upon their beliefs are compared to an aromatic plant which smells nice but is bitter when tasted. Lastly, those hypocrites who neither believe nor practice what they preach are likened to colocynth plants which have no scent or flavor at all. This hadith teaches us about how important it is for us as Muslims to practice what we preach so we can be true believers in Allah's eyes.
