Sahih al-Bukhari 5413 (Book 70, Hadith 41) #5187
Eating Barley Unsieved

SUMMARY: This hadith explains how the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his companions used to eat barley without sieving it.

Narrated Abu Hazim: I asked Sahl bin Sa'd, "Did Allah's Messenger ever eat white flour?" Sahl said, "Allah's Messenger never saw white flour since Allah sent him as an Apostle till He took him unto Him". I asked, "Did the people have (use) sieves during the lifetime of Allah's Messenger ?" Sahl said, "Allah's Messenger never saw (used) a sieve since Allah sent him as an Apostle until He took him unto Him," I said, "How could you eat barley unsieved?" he said, "We used to grind it and then blow off its husk, and after the husk flew away, we used to prepare the dough (bake) and eat it".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be grateful for all your blessings no matter how small they may seem; Make use of whatever resources you have in order to make your life better; Find ways of making food from what is available around you; Respect those who are less fortunate than you.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains how the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his companions used to eat barley without sieving it. They would grind the barley until its husk flew away, then prepare a dough from it and bake it. This shows us that even though they did not have access to modern technology such as sieves, they still found ways of making food from what was available to them. It also teaches us that we should be grateful for all of our blessings, no matter how small they may seem. We should also strive to make use of whatever resources we have in order to make our lives better and easier.
