Retaining a Wife After Ila Expires

SUMMARY: Allah has ordered that if the period of Ila expires, then the husband must either retain his wife in a handsome manner or divorce her.

Narrated Nafi': Ibn 'Umar used to say about the Ila (which Allah defined (in the Holy Book), "If the period of Ila expires, then the husband has either to retain his wife in a handsome manner or to divorce her as Allah has ordered".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect your spouse even after any agreements have expired; treat your spouse kindly; enter into marriage with good intentions; follow Allah's orders regarding marriage matters.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about what to do when the period of Ila expires. The term ‘Ila’ refers to an agreement between a husband and wife where they agree not to have sexual relations for a certain amount of time. In this hadith, it is stated that when this period ends, the husband must either retain his wife in a handsome manner or divorce her as Allah has ordered. This means that he should treat her with respect and kindness regardless of whether he chooses to keep her as his wife or let her go. It also implies that if he does decide to keep her, then it should be done with good intentions and not out of obligation or pressure from anyone else. The lesson here is that marriage should be entered into with respect and kindness towards one another, even after any agreements have expired.
