Sahih al-Bukhari 5119 (Book 67, Hadith 55) #4901
The Cancellation of Mut'a Marriage

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that temporary marriage, known as Mut'a, is no longer allowed.

Salama bin Al-Akwa' said: Allah's Messenger 's said, "If a man and a woman agree (to marry temporarily), their marriage should last for three nights, and if they like to continue, they can do so; and if they want to separate, they can do so". I do not know whether that was only for us or for all the people in general. Abu 'Abdullah (Al-Bukhari) said: 'Ali made it clear that the Prophet said, "The Mut'a marriage has been cancelled (made unlawful).

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic rulings even if we don't understand them fully at first glance .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the concept of temporary marriage in Islam. It was a practice that was allowed for a period of time but has since been cancelled and made unlawful. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that if two people agree to marry temporarily, their marriage should last for three nights and if they want to continue or separate after this period then they can do so. However, it is unclear whether this ruling applied only to the people at the time or all people in general. Later on, 'Ali clarified that the Prophet ﷺ declared temporary marriages as unlawful and thus it is not permissible anymore in Islam.
