Sahih al-Bukhari 4589 (Book 65, Hadith 111) #4372
The Battle of Uhud and Medina's Purifying Power

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) discussing the verse 4:88 of the Quran and how it relates to a situation in which some of his companions refused to fight in the battle of Uhud. He then said that Medina expels impurities like fire expels impurities from silver.

Narrated Zaid bin Thabit: Regarding the Verse:-- "Then what is the matter with you that you are divided into two parties about the hypocrites?" (4:88) Some of the companions of the Prophet returned from the battle of Uhud (ie refused to fight) whereupon the Muslims got divided into two parties; one of them was in favor of their execution and the other was not in favour of it. So there ware revealed: "Then what is the matter with you that you are divided into two parties about the hypocrites?" (4:88). Then the Prophet said "It (ie Medina) is Taiba (good), it expels impurities as the fire expels the impurities of silver".
