Sahih al-Bukhari 4496 (Book 65, Hadith 23) #4284
The Significance of Safa and Marwa in Islam

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that the practice of going around Safa and Marwa was a custom of the pre-Islamic period, but when Islam came, it was replaced by the commandment to perform Tawaf between them.

Narrated 'Asim bin Sulaiman: I asked Anas bin Malik about Safa and Marwa. Anas replied, "We used to consider (ie going around) them a custom of the Pre-islamic period of Ignorance, so when Islam came, we gave up going around them. Then Allah revealed" "Verily, Safa and Marwa (ie two mountains at Mecca) are among the Symbols of Allah. So it is not harmful of those who perform the Hajj of the House (of Allah) or perform the Umra to ambulate (Tawaf) between them". (2:158)

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic teachings over customs from pre-Islamic times; Respect for symbols associated with Allah; Perform Tawaf between Safa and Marwa during Hajj/Umra rituals .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that before Islam, people used to go around Safa and Marwa as a custom. However, when Islam came, Allah revealed a verse in the Quran which commanded people to perform Tawaf between these two mountains instead. These two mountains are considered symbols of Allah and thus it is not harmful for those who are performing Hajj or Umra to walk between them. This hadith teaches us that we should follow Islamic teachings instead of customs from pre-Islamic times. It also shows us how important these two mountains are in Islamic tradition as they are symbols of Allah himself.
