Horse Racing Ordered by the Prophet Muhammad

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) ordered a horse race between trained and untrained horses, and Ibn Umar participated in the race.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar: Allah's Messenger ordered for a horse race; the trained horses were to run from a place called Al-Hafya' to Thaniyat Al-Wada' and the horses which were not trained were to run from Al-Thaniya to the Masjid (mosque of) Bani Zuraiq. The sub narrator added: Ibn 'Umar was one of those who took part in the race.
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ سَابَقَ بَيْنَ الْخَيْلِ الَّتِي أُضْمِرَتْ مِنَ الْحَفْيَاءِ، وَأَمَدُهَا ثَنِيَّةُ الْوَدَاعِ، وَسَابَقَ بَيْنَ الْخَيْلِ الَّتِي لَمْ تُضْمَرْ مِنَ الثَّنِيَّةِ إِلَى مَسْجِدِ بَنِي زُرَيْقٍ، وَأَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ كَانَ فِيمَنْ سَابَقَ بِهَا‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, ordered a horse race between trained and untrained horses. The starting point for the trained horses was a place called Al-Hafya', while the starting point for the untrained horses was at Thaniyat Al-Wada'. Both groups were to end their races at Masjid Bani Zuraiq. One of those who took part in this race was Ibn Umar. This hadith teaches us that it is permissible to take part in recreational activities such as horse racing as long as they are done within Islamic guidelines and do not involve any form of gambling or betting. It also shows us that we should strive to participate in activities that bring joy and happiness into our lives, while still adhering to Islamic principles.
