Marriage of the Prophet (ﷺ) and Safiya

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) married Safiya after manumitting her and her Mahr was herself.

Narrated 'Abdul 'Aziz bin Suhaib: Anas bin Malik said, "The Prophet took Safiya as a captive. He manumitted her and married her". Thabit asked Anas, "What did he give her as Mahr (ie marriage gift)?" Anas replied".Her Mahr was herself, for he manumitted her".
حَدَّثَنَا آدَمُ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ صُهَيْبٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ يَقُولُ سَبَى النَّبِيُّ صَفِيَّةَ، فَأَعْتَقَهَا وَتَزَوَّجَهَا‏.‏ فَقَالَ ثَابِتٌ لأَنَسٍ مَا أَصْدَقَهَا قَالَ أَصْدَقَهَا نَفْسَهَا فَأَعْتَقَهَا‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the marriage of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to Safiya. The Prophet ﷺ took Safiya as a captive but then manumitted her before marrying her. This means that he freed her from slavery before they got married. As a mahr or marriage gift to Safiya, he gave himself by freeing her from slavery. This hadith teaches us that it is important to treat people with respect and kindness regardless of their social status or background. It also shows us that freedom is an invaluable gift which should be given generously when possible. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of marriage in Islam as a way to build strong relationships between two people who are committed to each other’s well-being and happiness for life.
