The Strength of Abu Bakr

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) instructed Abu Bakr to lead the prayer despite Aisha's concern that he would be too emotional to do so.

Ibn 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: When the illness of Messenger of Allah became serious, he was asked about the leading of Salat and he said, "Ask Abu Bakr to lead Salat". Whereupon, 'Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) said; "Abu Bakr is very tender hearted. He is bound to be overcome by weeping when he recites the Qur'an". Messenger of Allah repeated, "Ask him (Abu Bakr) to lead Salat". In another narration: 'Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) said: "When Abu Bakr stands in your place, he will not be able to recite the Noble Qur'an to the people on account of weeping". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the strength of Abu Bakr and his leadership qualities. When the illness of the Prophet Muhammad became serious, he was asked about who should lead prayer and he instructed them to ask Abu Bakr. Despite Aisha's concern that he would be too emotional to do so due to his tender heartedness, the Prophet repeated his instruction for Abu Bakr to lead prayer. This hadith teaches us that even in difficult times we must remain strong and have faith in our abilities as leaders. It also shows us how important it is for us to follow instructions from those who are wiser than us even if we may not understand why they are asking us something at first glance.
