The Rewards of the Afterlife

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of not being too attached to worldly possessions and instead focusing on the rewards in the afterlife.

Ibrahim bin 'Abdur-Rahman bin 'Auf reported: Food was brought to 'Abdur-Rahman bin 'Auf (May Allah be pleased with him) when he was observing Saum (fast) and he said: "Mus'ab bin 'Umair (May Allah be pleased with him) was martyred and he was better than me, but only one sheet was available to shroud him. It was so small that when his head was covered; his feet remained uncovered and if his feet were covered, his head remained uncovered. Then the bounties of this world have been bestowed upon us generously. I am afraid that the reward of our good deeds have been awarded to us in this world". On this he began to sob and left the food untouched. Al- Bukhari.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how we should not be too attached to worldly possessions and instead focus on our rewards in the afterlife. It tells us a story of Mus'ab bin 'Umair who was martyred and only given one sheet to shroud him with, which was so small that it could not cover his entire body. Abdur Rahman bin Auf then reflects on this story when he sees food brought to him while observing fast and realizes that he has been blessed with many bounties from this world but wonders if these blessings have taken away from his reward in the afterlife. He then begins to sob and leaves the food untouched as a reminder for himself that he should focus more on his reward in the hereafter than what he has been given here in this world. This hadith teaches us that we should be grateful for all our blessings but also remember that our ultimate goal is achieving success in life after death by doing good deeds here on earth. We must strive for balance between enjoying what we have been given here while also striving for greater rewards beyond this life.
