Sahih al-Bukhari 4023 (Book 64, Hadith 72) #3847
Mercy and Forgiveness in Times of War

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) showed mercy and forgiveness to the prisoners of Badr, even though they were considered 'filthy people', due to the intercession of Al-Mutim bin Adi.

Narrated Jubair bin Mut'im: I heard the Prophet reciting Surat-at-Tur in Maghrib prayer, and that was at a time when belief was first planted in my heart. The Prophet while speaking about the war prisoners of Badr, said, "Were Al-Mutim bin Adi alive and interceded with me for these filthy people, I would definitely forgive them for his sake".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the mercy and forgiveness that was shown by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ towards the prisoners of Badr. Even though these prisoners were considered 'filthy people', he still showed them mercy due to the intercession of Al-Mutim bin Adi. This hadith teaches us that we should always show mercy and forgiveness, even in times of war, as it is a sign of strength rather than weakness. It also shows us how powerful intercession can be when it comes from a righteous person. We should strive to be like Al-Mutim bin Adi who was able to bring about such great change with his words alone.
