Riyad as-Salihin 1689 (Book 17, Hadith 179) #38178
The Consequences of Keeping a Dog

SUMMARY: Keeping a dog for any purpose other than guarding property or flock of sheep will result in the deduction of good deeds.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah said, "He who keeps a dog, will lose out of his good deeds equal to one Qirat every day, except one who keeps it for guarding the fields or the herd". Al-Bukhari and Muslim. In a narration of Muslim, the Messenger of Allah is reported to have said: "He who keeps a dog for any reason other than to guard his property (lands) or his flock of sheep, his good deeds equal to two Qirat will be deducted every day".

QUICK LESSONS:
Keep dogs only when necessary for guarding properties or flocks
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the consequences of keeping a dog. According to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, if someone keeps a dog for any reason other than to guard their property or flock of sheep then they will lose out on their good deeds equal to one Qirat every day. In another narration it is mentioned that two Qirats are deducted every day instead. A qirat is an amount that cannot be measured and it symbolizes something very valuable and precious. Therefore this hadith teaches us that we should not keep dogs unless it is necessary for guarding our properties or flocks as it can lead to loss in our good deeds which are also very valuable and precious.
