Fasting Three Days Every Month

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) fasting three days of every month without specifying which days.

Mu'adhah Al-Adawiyyah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: I asked 'Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her). Did the Messenger of Allah use to observe three days of Saum (fasting) in every month?" She replied, "Yes". I asked, "On which days in the month did he observed fast?" She replied that he did not mind on which days of the month he observed fast. Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Observe regular fasting as part of faith practice .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of fasting in Islam. It is reported that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) used to observe three days of Saum, or fasting, in every month. He did not specify which days he would fast on, but rather left it open for himself and other Muslims to decide when they would fast during each month. This shows us that it is important for Muslims to observe regular fasting as part of their faith practice, but also that there is flexibility in how this can be done. Additionally, this hadith highlights the importance of seeking knowledge from those who are more knowledgeable than us - Mu'adhah Al-Adawiyyah asked 'Aishah about the Prophet's practice and she was able to provide an answer based on her experience with him.
