Fasting for Spiritual Purification

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a man who visited the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and told him that he had not eaten anything except at night since his last visit. The Prophet (ﷺ) advised him to observe fasting during Ramadan and fast one day from each month, but the man asked if he could do more. The Prophet (ﷺ) then advised him to fast three days in every month, and three days during the sacred months while omitting fasting for three days alternately.

Reported Mujibah Al-Bahiliyah on the authority of her father or uncle that he visited the Messenger of Allah once and then went to see him again after a year. His appearance had totally changed. He asked the Messenger of Allah if he had recognized him. The Messenger of Allah asked, "Who are you?" He replied: "I am Al- Bahili who visited you last year". The Messenger of Allah said, "You were quite handsome, what has changed your appearance so much?" He replied, "Since my departure from here, I have not eaten anything except at night". The Messenger of Allah remarked, "You have put yourself to torture. Observe Saum (fasting) during the Month of Patience (ie, Ramadan) and fast one day from each month". He submitted, "Permit me to observe more voluntary fasts because I have capacity to do so". The Messenger of Allah said, "Then observe fasts for two days in every month". He said, "Permit me to observe more". The Messenger of Allah said, "Observe fasts on three days in every month". He requested that he should be allowed to observe more fasts. The Messenger of Allah said, "Fast three days during the sacred months and omit fasting for three days alternately". He joined his three fingers together and left them apart while repeating this sentence thrice. Abu Dawud.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of spiritual purification through fasting. It was reported by Mujibah Al-Bahiliyah on the authority of her father or uncle that he visited the Messenger of Allah ﷺ once and then went to see him again after a year. His appearance had totally changed, so when asked what happened, he replied that since his departure from there, he hadn't eaten anything except at night. Upon hearing this, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ remarked that it was torture to himself and advised him to observe Saum during Ramadan as well as one day from each month. When asked if he could do more than this, the Prophet ﷺ allowed him to fast two days in every month before finally allowing three days in every month with an additional three days during sacred months while omitting fasting for three days alternately which was demonstrated by joining his fingers together thrice. This hadith teaches us about spiritual purification through fasting which is an important part of Islamic practice as it helps us become closer with God Almighty by controlling our desires and strengthening our faith in Him alone.
