Encouraging Night Prayers in Couples

SUMMARY: This hadith encourages couples to wake each other up for night prayers and shows mercy to those who do so.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah said, "May Allah show mercy to a man who gets up during the night and performs Salat, awakens his wife to pray and if she refuses, he sprinkles water on her face (to make her get up). May Allah show mercy to a woman who gets up during the night and performs Salat, awakens her husband for the same purpose; and if he refuses, she sprinkles water on his face". Abu Dawud.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith encourages couples to wake each other up for night prayers and shows mercy to those who do so. It is narrated by Abu Hurairah that the Prophet Muhammad said that Allah will show mercy on a man who wakes his wife up for night prayer if she refuses and sprinkles water on her face. Similarly, Allah will show mercy on a woman who wakes her husband up for night prayer if he refuses and sprinkles water on his face. This hadith teaches us the importance of performing salat at night as well as the importance of mutual respect between spouses in Islam. It also emphasizes the need to be patient with one another when it comes to religious obligations such as praying at night or any other time of day. The lesson here is that we should always strive to help our spouse fulfill their religious duties even if they are not willing or able to do so themselves.
