Riyad as-Salihin 919 (Book 6, Hadith 26) #37408
Praying for the Deceased

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) visited a deceased person and taught his family to only ask for good things. He also prayed for the deceased and asked Allah to forgive him and grant him a successor from his descendants.

Umm Salamah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah visited Abu Salamah (May Allah be pleased with him) when his eyes were open soon after he died. He closed them (the eyes) for him and said, "When the soul is taken away, the sight follows it". Some members of his family began to weep. He said: "Do not supplicate for yourselves anything but good, for the angels say 'amin' to what you say". Then he said, "O Allah! Forgive Abu Salamah, raise his rank among those who are rightly-guided and grant him a successor from his descendants who remain behind. Grant him pardon and us, too. O Rabb of the worlds. Make his grave spacious for him and give him light in it". Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of praying for those who have passed away. The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, visited Abu Salamah after he died and closed his eyes as a sign of respect. He then taught those present to only ask for good things when supplicating or praying, as angels will say ‘Amin’ or ‘Amen’ in response to these prayers. Finally, he prayed that Allah would forgive Abu Salamah and grant him a successor from his descendants who remain behind. This hadith teaches us that we should always pray for those who have passed away in order to seek mercy from Allah on their behalf, as well as asking Him to forgive them and grant them success in the hereafter. It also reminds us that our prayers are heard by angels who respond with ‘Amin’ or ‘Amen’ when we make supplications or requests of God Almighty.
