Riyad as-Salihin 881 (Book 5, Hadith 38) #37370
Blessing in Response to Praising Allah

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) responded to one person's sneeze with a blessing, but not the other. When asked why, he explained that the first person praised Allah while the second did not.

Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: When two men sneezed in the presence of the Prophet , he responded to one with "Yarhamuk-Allah (may Allah have mercy on you)" and did not respond to the other. The latter said to him: "You invoked a blessing on this man but did not do so in my case". The Prophet replied, "He praised Allah (ie, he said 'Al-hamdu lillah') but you did not". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Take advantage of opportunities to thank and praise God for His blessings and mercy upon us all; be mindful of our words at all times; say 'Alhamdulillah'.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how we should respond when someone sneezes. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that if someone praises Allah after they sneeze, then we should respond with a blessing for them. In this case, one of the two men who sneezed praised Allah and so was given a blessing in response by the Prophet ﷺ. However, when the other man did not praise Allah after he sneezed, no blessing was given in response as it was seen as an opportunity missed to thank and praise God for His blessings. This hadith teaches us that we should always take advantage of opportunities to thank and praise God for His blessings and mercy upon us all. It also shows us how important it is to be mindful of our words at all times; even something as small as saying 'Alhamdulillah' can have great rewards from God Almighty!
