Riyad as-Salihin 880 (Book 5, Hadith 37) #37369
Responding to Sneezes

SUMMARY: When someone sneezes, it is recommended to respond with a blessing if they praise Allah, but not if they do not.

Abu Musa (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah said, "When one of you sneezes and praises Allah (ie, says Al-hamdu lillah), you should invoke Allah's Mercy upon him (ie, say Yarhamuk-Allah); but if he does not praise Allah, you should not respond". Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respond with a blessing when someone praises Allah after sneezing .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that when someone sneezes, we should respond by saying "Yarhamuk-Allah" which means "may Allah have mercy on you". This is only if the person who sneezed has praised Allah first. If the person does not praise Allah after sneezing, then we should not say anything in response. This hadith encourages us to show respect and kindness towards others and reminds us of our duty as Muslims to always remember and thank God for all of His blessings. It also teaches us that even small acts like responding to a sneeze can be an act of worship when done with the right intention.
