This hadith is about a man named Safwan ibn Umayya who was warned that anyone who does not do hijra will be ruined. He then went to Madina and slept in the mosque with his cloak as a pillow. A thief came and took his cloak and he grabbed hold of the thief and brought him to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. The Prophet Muhammad asked if he stole it and when he said yes, he ordered that his hand be cut off. However, Safwan offered to give him the cloak as charity instead which showed mercy on behalf of both parties involved in this situation. This hadith teaches us that we should always show mercy towards others even when they have done wrong because it can lead to more positive outcomes than punishment alone.
