(Book 38, Hadith 18) #36552
Wala' Belongs to the Liberator

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that the wala' of a slave-girl belongs to the one who sets her free.

Malik related to me from Nafi from Abdullah ibn Umar that A'isha umm al-muminin wanted to buy a slave-girl and set her free. Her people said, "We will sell her to you provided that her wala' is ours". She mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he said, "Don't let that hinder you, for the wala' only belongs to the one who sets free".

QUICK LESSONS:
Helping those less fortunate than oneself; setting slaves free; being kind and just towards others; showing charity towards others in need.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a situation in which A’isha umm al-muminin wanted to buy and set free a slave girl. However, her people said they would only sell her if they kept her wala'. She asked the Prophet Muhammad PBUH about this and he said that she should not let it hinder her from setting the girl free as the wala' only belongs to whoever sets them free. This hadith teaches us that freeing slaves is an act of great virtue and kindness in Islam and those who do so will be rewarded for their good deed by Allah SWT. It also shows us how important it is for us to help those less fortunate than ourselves by freeing them from slavery or any other form of oppression or injustice.
