(Book 38, Hadith 19) #36553
Setting Slaves Free

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that freedom should be given to slaves and the wala' only belongs to the one who sets them free.

Malik related to me from Yahya ibn Said from Amra bint Abd ar- Rahman that Barirah came asking the help of A'isha, umm al-muminin. A'isha said, "If your masters agree that I pay them your price in one lump sum and set you free I will do it". Barirah mentioned that to her masters and they said, "No, not unless your wala' is ours". Yahya ibn Said added that Amra bint Abd ar-Rahman claimed that A'isha mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace said, "Buy her and set her free. The wala' only belongs to the one who sets free".

QUICK LESSONS:
Buy slaves and set them free according to Allah's will; strive for justice and fairness in our dealings with others; treat everyone equally regardless of their social status or background; show compassion towards those who are vulnerable or disadvantaged in any way .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about setting slaves free and giving them their freedom. It was narrated by Malik from Yahya ibn Said from Amra bint Abd ar-Rahman that Barirah came asking for help from A’isha, umm al-muminin. A’isha offered to pay her masters a lump sum in order to set her free but they refused unless they got her wala'. The Prophet Muhammad then said that she should be bought and set free as the wala' only belongs to the one who sets them free. This hadith teaches us an important lesson about slavery; it is wrong and should not be practiced as it goes against Allah's will. We must always strive for justice and fairness in our dealings with others, especially those who are vulnerable or disadvantaged in any way.
