Giving Charity on Behalf of a Deceased Person

SUMMARY: A man asked the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) if he could give charity on behalf of his mother who had died suddenly. The Prophet (PBUH) said yes.

Malik related to me from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father from A'isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that a man said to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, "My mother died suddenly, and I think that had she spoken, she would have given sadaqa. Shall I give sadaqa for her?" The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Yes".

QUICK LESSONS:
Give charity on behalf of deceased people .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about giving charity on behalf of a deceased person. It was narrated by Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father from A'isha, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). In this hadith, a man asked the Messenger of Allah if he could give sadaqa for his mother who had died suddenly and did not have time to give sadaqa herself. The Messenger of Allah said yes and encouraged him to do so as an act of kindness towards her. This teaches us that even after someone has passed away we can still do good deeds in their name and benefit them in ways they may not have been able to while alive. We can also learn that it is important to be generous with our wealth and help those in need even after we are gone by leaving behind charitable donations or endowments for others to benefit from after our death.
