This hadith teaches us that breaking an oath is a serious matter and has consequences. According to this hadith, if someone breaks an oath which he has stressed then he must free a slave or clothe ten poor people as recompense. If someone breaks an oath but did not stress it then they must feed ten poor people with a mudd of wheat each as recompense. For those who do not have the means to do so, they should fast for three days instead as recompense.
