Plaiting Hair and its Limits

SUMMARY: It is not permissible to plait one's hair in a way that makes it look like it has been matted.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi from 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar that Umar ibn al-Khattab said, "Someone who puts plaits in his hair should shave his head, and do not plait your hair in such a way that it seems you have matted it".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the limits of plaiting one's hair. Umar ibn al-Khattab said that someone who puts plaits in their hair should shave their head if they have done so in a way that makes it look like it has been matted. This hadith teaches us to be mindful of our appearance and to ensure we are following the Islamic guidelines for grooming ourselves. We should take care not to go beyond what is permissible when styling our hair or any other part of our body as this could lead us into sinning. Furthermore, this hadith also serves as a reminder for us to be conscious of how we present ourselves and how others may perceive us based on our outward appearance.
