Breaking Fast During Pregnancy

SUMMARY: A pregnant woman should break the fast if it becomes difficult for her and she should feed a poor man one mudd of wheat in place of every day, and make up for each day of the fast that she misses.

Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that Abdullah ibn Umar was asked about what a pregnant woman should do if the fast became difficult for her and she feared for her child, and he said, "She should break the fast and feed a poor man one mudd of wheat in place of every day, using the mudd of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace". Malik said, "The people of knowledge consider that she has to make up for each day of the fast that she misses as Allah, the Exalted and Glorified, says, 'And whoever of you is sick or on a journey should fast an equal number of other days, ' and they consider her pregnancy and her concern for her child as a sickness".

QUICK LESSONS:
Feeding poor people when possible .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses what a pregnant woman should do if fasting becomes difficult for her. According to this hadith, if a pregnant woman finds it hard to fast due to her pregnancy or concern for her child, then she is allowed to break the fast and feed a poor man one mudd of wheat in place of every day that she missed. The people of knowledge consider this as equivalent to making up for each day that was missed since Allah has said in the Quran that those who are sick or on a journey can make up their days later. This hadith teaches us about being compassionate towards those who are vulnerable such as pregnant women and also encourages us to help those who are less fortunate than us by feeding them when we can.
