Fidya and Fasting

SUMMARY: Anas ibn Malik used to pay fidya when he was too old to fast, but it is not obligatory. The best option is to fast when one is able. If one pays compensation, they should give a mudd of food for every day missed using the mudd of the Prophet.

Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that Anas ibn Malik used to pay fidya when he had grown old and could no longer manage to do the fast. Malik said, "I do not consider that to do so is obligatory, but what I like most is that a man does the fast when he is strong enough. Whoever pays compensation gives one mudd of food in place of every day, using the mudd of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the concept of fidya, which is a form of compensation for those who are unable to fast due to age or illness. It states that while paying fidya is not obligatory, it is preferable for people who are able to do so to actually fast instead. If someone does choose to pay fidya, they should give a mudd of food in place of every day missed using the mudd measurement used by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. This hadith teaches us that we should strive our best in fulfilling our religious obligations even if we face difficulties or hardships in doing so. We must also be generous with our wealth and help those who are unable fulfill their religious obligations due their circumstances by giving them aid such as paying their fidya on their behalf if possible.
