Fasting in Ramadan

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised to not start fasting until the new moon is seen and to not break the fast until it is seen. If it is obscured, then calculate when it should be.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi from Abdullah ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, once mentioned Ramadan and said, "Do not begin the fast until you see the new moon, and do not break the fast (at the end of Ramadan) until you see it. If the new moon is obscured from you, then work out (when it should be)".

QUICK LESSONS:
Wait for sighting of new moon before starting or breaking fast , Use knowledge and intellect to understand Allah's will .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of fasting during Ramadan. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised that Muslims should wait for the new moon before beginning their fast and wait for its sighting before ending their fast. If the new moon is obscured from view due to weather or other reasons, then Muslims should calculate when it should be based on astronomical calculations. This hadith teaches us that we must follow Allah's commands even if we cannot see them with our eyes and that we must use our knowledge and intellect to understand His will. It also teaches us patience as sometimes waiting for something can be difficult but necessary in order to fulfill Allah's commands.
