QUICK LESSONS:
Respect for the dead, Prohibiting unnecessary practices
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the prohibition of following someone who has passed away with a burning torch. It was narrated by Yahya from Malik from Said ibn Abi Said al-Maqburi that Abu Hurayra forbade anyone to follow him with a burning torch after his death. Yahya said he heard Malik disapprove of this practice as well. This hadith teaches us that it is not permissible to follow someone who has passed away in any way, including carrying a burning torch behind them during their funeral procession. We should instead focus on remembering them and honoring their memory in other ways such as praying for them and speaking positively about them.
