Embalming Instructions of Asma bint Abi Bakr

SUMMARY: Asma bint Abi Bakr instructed her family to embalm her body with incense and not to use any embalming substance on her shroud or follow her with a burning torch.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa that Asma bint Abi Bakr said to her family, "Perfume my clothes with incense when I die and then embalm me. Do not put any of the embalming substance on my shroud, and do not follow me with a burning torch".

EXPLANATIONS:
Asma bint Abu Bakr was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad and one of the first converts to Islam. She gave instructions to her family about how she wanted them to prepare for her death. She asked them to perfume her clothes with incense when she died and then embalm her body. She also asked them not to put any of the embalming substance on the cloth that would be used as a shroud for burying her nor follow behind it with a burning torch. This hadith teaches us that we should think ahead and plan for our death so that our families are not burdened by having to make decisions at such an emotional time. It also teaches us respect for those who have passed away by ensuring their burial is done in accordance with Islamic teachings and traditions.
