Musnad Ahmad 997 (Book 5, Hadith 421) #34647
Steadfastness in Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was so still and composed while bowing in prayer that even a glass of water placed on his back would not spill.

It was narrated that 'Ali (رضي الله عنها) said: When the Messenger of Allah bowed, if a glass of water were placed on his back it would not spill.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be devoted & concentrated during your prayers & strive to be like the Prophet Muhammad while praying. Express your gratitude towards Allah through your prayers.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of being steadfast and devoted when engaging in prayer. It is narrated that 'Ali ibn Abi Talib said that when the Messenger of Allah bowed during prayer, if a glass of water were placed on his back it would not spill. This shows how still and composed he was while praying; he was completely focused on worshipping Allah without any distractions or disturbances. This hadith serves as an example for us to follow; we should strive to be as devoted and concentrated during our prayers as the Prophet Muhammad was. We should also remember that our prayers are an opportunity for us to connect with Allah and express our gratitude for His blessings; therefore we should make sure we are present both physically and spiritually when engaging in this act of worship.
