Musnad Ahmad 937 (Book 5, Hadith 364) #34590
Difficult Times & Selfishness

SUMMARY: This hadith talks about a difficult time when people will be selfish and not share their wealth, and good people will be humiliated. It also mentions that the Prophet ﷺ forbade forced sales, transactions based on ambiguity and selling crops before they have ripened.

An old man of Banu Tameem said: 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) addressed us - or he said: 'Ali said: There will come a difficult time when the rich man will hold fast to that which is in his hand although he was not enjoined to do that. Allah says: 'And do not forget liberality between yourselves' Al-Baqarah 2:237. The evil people will be elevated and good people will be humiliated. And those who are under compulsion (of force or necessity) will be bought from. The Prophet forbade forced sales, transactions based on ambiguity and selling crops before they have ripened.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith talks about a difficult time in which people will become selfish and not share their wealth with others as Allah has commanded them to do. The evil people will be elevated while the good ones are humiliated. People may also be forced to sell things against their own free will or without understanding what is being sold due to ambiguous terms in the transaction. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ forbade such practices as it is unjust for those involved in the transaction. He taught us that we should always practice liberality between ourselves so that everyone can benefit from it equally, even during difficult times.
