Understanding the Qur'an and Documents

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the understanding of the Qur'an and what is written in documents, such as diyah (blood money), ransom of prisoners, and that a muslim should be killed in retaliation for a kafir.

It was narrated that Abu Juhaifah said: We asked 'Ali (رضي الله عنه): Do you have something from the Messenger of Allah apart from the Qur'an? He said: No, by the One who split the seed and created the soul, except the understanding that Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, helps a person to acquire of the Qur'an or what is in the document.I said: What is in the document? He said: Diyah (blood money), ransom of prisoners and muslim should be killed in retaliation for a kafir.
حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي جُحَيْفَةَ، قَالَ سَأَلْنَا عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ هَلْ عِنْدَكُمْ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ شَيْءٌ بَعْدَ الْقُرْآنِ قَالَ لَا وَالَّذِي فَلَقَ الْحَبَّةَ وَبَرَأَ النَّسَمَةَ إِلَّا فَهْمٌ يُؤْتِيهِ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ رَجُلًا فِي الْقُرْآنِ أَوْ مَا فِي الصَّحِيفَةِ قُلْتُ وَمَا فِي الصَّحِيفَةِ قَالَ الْعَقْلُ وَفِكَاكُ الْأَسِيرِ وَلَا يُقْتَلُ مُسْلِمٌ بِكَافِرٍ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith was narrated by Abu Juhaifah who asked 'Ali about something from the Messenger of Allah apart from the Quran. 'Ali said that he only has understanding that Allah helps people to acquire from the Quran or what is written in documents. When asked what is written in documents, 'Ali said it includes diyah, ransom for prisoners, and that a muslim should be killed in retaliation for a kafir. This hadith teaches us to understand our religion through reading and studying both the Quran as well as other documents related to it. It also teaches us about justice; if someone kills another person then they must pay diyah or ransom for their crime according to Islamic law. Lastly, this hadith also teaches us about equality; if someone kills a Muslim then they must be killed in return regardless of their religion or beliefs.
