Musnad Ahmad 598 (Book 5, Hadith 35) #34261
Asking Permission to Enter

SUMMARY: Ali (RA) used to ask permission to enter the Prophet's (SAW) presence, and if he was praying, the Prophet (SAW) would say Subhan Allah.

It was narrated that Abu Umamah said: 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: I used to come to the Prophet and ask permission to enter. If he was praying, he would say Subhan Allah, and if he was not praying, he would give me permission to enter.

QUICK LESSONS:
Ask permission before entering someone's space or presence. Show respect and humility towards others at all times. Respond politely even if you are busy with something else.

EXPLANATIONS:
It is important for us to show respect and humility when we are in the presence of someone else. This hadith teaches us that even when we are in the presence of a great person like the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, it is important for us to ask permission before entering their space. The Prophet ﷺ would respond with “Subhan Allah” if he was busy praying, which means “Glory be to God”. This shows us that even though he was busy with something important like prayer, he still showed respect and humility by responding politely instead of ignoring or dismissing his visitor. We can learn from this hadith that it is always important for us to show respect and humility when we are in someone else’s space or presence.
