Musnad Ahmad 371 (Book 2, Hadith 273) #34048
Accepting Remuneration for Work Done in the Name of Allah

SUMMARY: Doing work for the sake of Allah is a noble act, but it is also permissible to accept remuneration if it is given without asking.

It was narrated that Ibn as Sa'idi al-Maliki said: 'Umar bin al Khattab (رضي الله عنه) appointed me in charge of the zakah, and when had finished with it and handed it over to him, he ordered that I be given some remuneration. I said: I only did it for the sake of Allah and my reward is with Allah. He said: Take what is given to you. I was appointed to do some work at the time of the Messenger of Allah and he gave me some remuneration, and I said the same as you have said, but the Messenger of Allah said to me: 'If you are given something without asking for it, then take it and give some in charity".

QUICK LESSONS:
Do good deeds solely for God's pleasure; Accept rewards/gifts graciously; Give back in charity as much as possible

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about doing work for the sake of Allah and how one should accept remuneration if it is given without asking. It was narrated that Ibn as Sa'idi al-Maliki said that Umar bin al Khattab appointed him in charge of zakah and when he finished with it, he ordered that he be given some remuneration. He said that he only did it for the sake of Allah and his reward was with Him, but Umar told him to take what was given to him. He then mentioned an incident from when he worked at the time of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ where Prophet Muhammad ﷺ told him to take what was offered without asking and give some in charity. This hadith teaches us that while doing good deeds solely for the pleasure of God is a noble act, we should not reject any rewards or gifts offered out kindness or generosity. We should accept them graciously while still giving back in charity as much as we can afford.
