Prohibiting Prayers at Certain Times

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) forbade praying at two times: after 'Asr until the sun sets and after Fajr until the sun rises.

It was narrated that Qatadah said: I heard Rufai' Abul-'Aliyah narrate from Ibn 'Abbas: A man told me - Shu’bah said: I think he said: one of the Companions of the Prophet - The most admired of them to me is Umar bin al Khattab (رضي الله عنه): The Messenger of Allah forbade praying at two times: after 'Asr until the sun sets and after Fajr until the sun rises.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رُفَيْعًا أَبَا الْعَالِيَةِ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، حَدَّثَنِي رِجَالٌ، قَالَ شُعْبَةُ أَحْسِبُهُ قَالَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ قَالَ وَأَعْجَبُهُمْ إِلَيَّ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ نَهَى عَنْ الصَّلَاةِ فِي سَاعَتَيْنِ بَعْدَ الْعَصْرِ حَتَّى تَغْرُبَ الشَّمْسُ وَبَعْدَ الصُّبْحِ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a prohibition of prayer during certain times of the day. According to this hadith, it is forbidden to pray after Asr until the sun sets and after Fajr until the sun rises. This was narrated by Qatadah who heard it from Rufai' Abul-'Aliyah who heard it from Ibn 'Abbas who heard it from one of the Companions of Prophet Muhammad PBUH. Umar bin al Khattab was mentioned as being one of these companions and he was admired for his actions in this regard. This hadith teaches us that we should be mindful about when we are praying and not do so during these prohibited times as instructed by Prophet Muhammad PBUH.
