The Power of Fear in Repentance

SUMMARY: A man who committed many sins was so afraid of Allah's punishment that he asked his sons to burn and scatter his body after death. But Allah brought him back to life and forgave him because of his fear.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said: "A man went to extremes in committing sins. When death came to him, he left instructions to his sons, saying: 'When I die, burn me, then grind me into powder, then scatter me in the wind and in the sea, for by Allah, if my Lord has power over me, He will subject me to a punishment that He has never subjected anyone to.’ So they did that to him, then (Allah) said to the earth: 'Return what you have taken,’ and there he was, standing. He said to him: 'What made you do what you have done?’ He said: 'Fear of You, O Lord.’ So He forgave him because of that (fear)".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us about the power of fear in repentance. It is narrated by Abu Hurairah that the Prophet Muhammad said a man went to extremes in committing sins, but when death came to him, he was so afraid of Allah's punishment that he left instructions for his sons to burn and scatter his body after death. However, when Allah had power over him, He brought him back to life and forgave him because of the fear he had for Him. This teaches us that even if we have done wrong things or made mistakes, we should never give up hope on being forgiven by Allah as long as we are sincere in our repentance and have true fear for Him. We should also remember that no matter how bad our deeds may be, they can still be forgiven if we turn towards Him with a sincere heart full of love and humility.
