The Verse of Expiation

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a man who kissed a woman and asked for expiation, but the Prophet ﷺ did not say anything to him. Then Allah revealed the Verse which was for all of the Prophet's nation who acted upon it.

It was narrated from Ibn Mas’ud that a man came to the Prophet and said that he had kissed a woman, and he started to ask about expiation, but he (the Prophet ) did not say anything to him. Then Allah revealed the Verse: "And perform prayers at the two ends of the day and in some hours of the night. Verily, the good deeds remove the evil deeds. That is a reminder for the mindful". 11:114 The man said: "O Messenger of Allah, is this (the Verse) just for me?" He said: "It is for whoever acts upon it among my nation".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a man who came to the Prophet and confessed that he had kissed a woman. He asked for expiation, but the Prophet did not answer him. Later on, Allah revealed a verse in Surah Hud which stated that if one performs prayers at both ends of the day and some hours of night, then their good deeds will remove their evil deeds as an act of reminder for those who are mindful. When this man heard this verse he asked if it was just meant for him or everyone else in his nation too. The Prophet replied that it was meant for anyone among his nation who acts upon it. This hadith teaches us that we should always be mindful and perform our prayers regularly so our good deeds can outweigh our bad ones as an act of repentance from sins we have committed unknowingly or knowingly. It also teaches us to seek forgiveness from Allah whenever we commit any sin so He may forgive us and guide us onto His path again with His mercy and grace.
