Sunan Ibn Majah 3845 (Book 34, Hadith 19) #33199
The Prayer of Asking Allah

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that when asking Allah for something, one should say a specific prayer and that this prayer encompasses both religious and worldly affairs.

Abu Malik, Sa'd Bin Tariq, narrated from his father that : when a man had come to the Messenger of Allah (SAWS), he heard him say: "O Messenger of Allah, what should I say when I ask of Allah?" He said: "Say: Allahumma-ghfirli warhamni wa 'afini warzuqni (O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, keep me safe and sound and grant me provision)," and he held up his four fingers apart from the thumb and said: "These combine your religious and worldly affairs".

This hadith explains the importance of asking Allah for help in all aspects of life. When making a request to Allah, one should say the following prayer “Allahumma-ghfirli warhamni wa 'afini warzuqni” which translates to “O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, keep me safe and sound and grant me provision”. The Prophet Muhammad then held up his four fingers apart from the thumb to emphasize that this prayer encompasses both religious and worldly affairs.
