Sunan Ibn Majah 3610 (Book 32, Hadith 61) #32964
Using Dead Meat for Other Purposes

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ passed by a dead sheep belonging to a freed slave woman and suggested that they take its skin and tan it for use, but was told that it was dead meat. He then clarified that it is only unlawful to eat it.

It was narrated from Maimunah that he (meaning the Prophet ) passed by a dead sheep belonging to the freed slave woman of Maimunah, that had been given to her in charity. He said: "Why don’t they take its skin and ten it, and make us of it?" They said: "O Messenger of Allah, it is dead meat".* He said: "It is only unlawful to eat it".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful of resources & do not waste them unnecessarily

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith highlights the importance of not wasting resources, even if they are considered unusable or unclean. The Prophet Muhammad saw a dead sheep belonging to a freed slave woman and suggested taking its skin and tanning it for use instead of letting the resource go to waste. He clarified that although eating the meat would be unlawful, using the skin would be permissible as long as there is no intention of consuming it. This hadith teaches us about being mindful of our resources and not wasting them unnecessarily, even if we cannot consume them directly ourselves. It also shows us how important charity is in Islam; this woman was given this sheep in charity which could have been used for other purposes than food if necessary.
