Sunan Ibn Majah 3603 (Book 32, Hadith 54) #32957
Clothing Appropriate for Men and Women

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) disapproved of 'Abdullah wearing a thin cloak dyed with safflower, and instead suggested that it be given to someone in his family to wear.

It was narrated from 'Amr bin Shu’aib, from his father, that his grandfather said: "We came with the Messenger of Allah was Thaniyat Adhakhir. He turned to me, and I was wearing a thin cloak dyed with safflower, and said: 'What is this?’ And I realized that he disliked it. I came to my family when they were heating their oven and threw it (in the oven). Then I came to him the following day and he said: 'O 'Abdullah, what happened to the thin cloak?’ I told him (what I had done) and he said: 'Why did you not give it to some of your family to wear, for there is nothing wrong with it for women.’"

QUICK LESSONS:
Dress modestly according to one's gender and age group; Give away items which are still usable by others who may need them more than oneself; Respect one's elders; Follow the teachings of Islam as taught by the Prophet Muhammad PBUH .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of clothing appropriate for men and women. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was travelling when he noticed 'Abdullah wearing a thin cloak dyed with safflower, which he disliked. Instead of throwing it away, the Prophet suggested that it be given to someone in his family to wear as there is nothing wrong with it for women. This hadith teaches us that we should dress modestly according to our gender and not wear clothes inappropriate for our gender or age group. It also teaches us the importance of not wasting things but rather giving them away if they are still usable by others who may need them more than we do.
