Sahih al-Bukhari 3445 (Book 60, Hadith 115) #3293
Exaggeration in Praise is Forbidden

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warned against exaggerating in praising him, as the Christians praised Jesus, and instead asked to be called the Slave of Allah and His Apostle.

Narrated 'Umar: I heard the Prophet saying, "Do not exaggerate in praising me as the Christians praised the son of Mary, for I am only a Slave. So, call me the Slave of Allah and His Apostle".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect Prophets , Avoid Idolatry/Shirk , Do Not Overpraise Anyone/Anything

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith was narrated by Umar ibn al-Khattab, who heard it from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. In this hadith, the Prophet warned against exaggerating in praising him as some Christians did with Jesus. He asked to be called a slave of God and His Apostle instead. This teaches us that we should not overpraise anyone or anything because it can lead to idolatry or shirk which is forbidden in Islam. We should also remember that all praise belongs to God alone and no one else deserves it more than Him. We should also remember that even though prophets are highly respected figures, they are still human beings like us and do not deserve any form of worship or excessive praise beyond what is due for them according to Islamic teachings.
