Sunan Ibn Majah 3573 (Book 32, Hadith 24) #32927
The Length of Lower Wrap for Believers

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that the lower wrap of a believer should come to mid-calf, but it is permissible to go as low as the ankle. Anything lower than the ankle is considered vanity and will lead to punishment in the hereafter.

It was narrated from 'Ala bin 'Abdur-Rahman that his father said: "I said to Abu Sa’eed: 'Did you hear anything from the Messenger of Allah concerning the lower wrap?’ He said: 'Yes. I heard the Messenger of Allah say: 'The lower wrap of the believer should come to mid-calf, but there is no sin on him if it comes between that point and the ankle. But whatever is lower than the ankle is in the Fire.’ And he said three times: 'Allah will not look at the one who lets his lower wrap drag out of vanity.’"

QUICK LESSONS:
Dress modestly without any pride or arrogance according to Allah's commands

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about how believers should dress modestly and not let their clothing drag out of vanity. It was narrated by Ala bin 'Abdur Rahman from his father who heard it from Abu Saeed, a companion of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. According to this hadith, believers should wear their lower wrap so that it comes up to mid calf level or even up till their ankles if they wish. However, anything below the ankles is considered vain and will lead to punishment in the hereafter. This hadith encourages us all to dress modestly without any pride or arrogance and reminds us that Allah Almighty looks at our hearts rather than our outward appearance.
