Sunan Ibn Majah 3239 (Book 28, Hadith 40) #32593
Eating Mastigure - A Food of Shepherds

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ did not forbid eating mastigure, but found it distasteful. Allah has benefited more than one person by this food and if the narrator had some he would eat it.

It was narrated from Jabir bin 'Abdullah: "The Prophet did not forbid (eating) mastigure (a small lizard) s, but he found that distasteful. It is the food of most shepherds, and Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has benefited more than one person thereby. If I had some I would eat it". Another chain reports a similar hadith.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful when consuming; Appreciate all types of foods; Respect Allah's wisdom ; Show gratitude towards His blessings ; Remain open-minded towards different cultures and beliefs .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet's opinion on eating mastigure which is a small lizard that is commonly eaten by shepherds. The Prophet did not forbid eating this food but found it distasteful. However Allah has benefited more than one person from this food and if Jabir bin 'Abdullah had some he would eat it himself. This hadith teaches us to be mindful of what we consume and to appreciate all types of foods as they can be beneficial for us in many ways even if we don't like them ourselves. We should also remember that Allah knows best and He may have created something for our benefit even though we may not understand why at first glance.
