Sunan Ibn Majah 3225 (Book 28, Hadith 26) #32579
Mercy and Compassion in Punishment

SUMMARY: The Prophet of Allah taught us that we should not be too harsh in our punishments, even if we have been wronged.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet of Allah said: "One of the Prophets was bitten by an ant, so he ordered that the ant colony be burned. Then Allah revealed to him: 'Because one ant bit you, you destroy one of the nations that glorify Allah?’" Another chain reports a similar hadith.

QUICK LESSONS:
Show mercy & compassion when punishing someone who has wronged you .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us the importance of mercy and compassion when it comes to punishment. It tells the story of a prophet who was bitten by an ant and wanted to punish the entire colony for it. However, Allah revealed to him that he should not be so harsh in his punishment as they were glorifying Him. This hadith teaches us that even if someone has wronged us or hurt us in some way, we should still show mercy and compassion when punishing them. We should not take out our anger on innocent people or animals just because one person has done something wrong. Instead, we must remember that everyone is capable of making mistakes and deserves a chance at redemption.
