Sunan Ibn Majah 2884 (Book 25, Hadith 3) #32238
The Duty of Hajj and its Frequency

SUMMARY: The hadith explains that Hajj is a duty to Allah, but it is not obligatory to do it every year.

It was narrated that 'Ali said: "When the following was revealed: "And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Ka’bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, for whoever can bear the way". 3:97 They asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, is Hajj every year?’ He remained silent. They asked: 'Is it every year?’ He said: 'No. If I had said yes, it would have become obligatory.’ Then the following was revealed: "O you who believe! Ask not about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble.’" 5:101

QUICK LESSONS:
Perform the pilgrimage to Makkah at least once in your lifetime if you are able; Ask beneficial and relevant questions about Islam; Respect religious obligations; Understand Islamic teachings correctly

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the importance of performing the pilgrimage to Makkah, known as Hajj. It is a duty that all Muslims owe to Allah and should be done at least once in their lifetime if they are able. However, this hadith also clarifies that it is not necessary for Muslims to perform Hajj every year. This was revealed after the Prophet Muhammad remained silent when asked if it was obligatory every year. Furthermore, this hadith also teaches us an important lesson about asking questions which may cause trouble or confusion if answered plainly. We should only ask questions which are beneficial and relevant for our understanding of Islam and its teachings.
